Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, AuditorGeneral, is, paying an official visit to New Plymouth.
Mr. H. J. Ge'k’.es, M.Agric., Sc., assistant in agriculture at Lincoln College, will leave in March next to take up an appointment as district agricultural organiser in Tasmania under the Department of Agriculture of that State, states a Christchurch Press Association message.
Sir Henry Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, completed 54 years' service with the bank on Thursday. He joined the bank’s Sydney branch as a boy in 1878, and his salary was then £5O per annum. His first post as manager was at the New Plymouth branch. In 1906 he was appointed manager at Auckland and in 1920 he was appointed general manager. Sir Henry was knighted in 1929 for distinguished services in banking in New Zealand.
The death has occurred of Miss Christina Anderson, daughter of the late Mr. John Anderson and Mrs. Anderson, of Kereru, Hawke’s Bay, who was trained as a nurse in the Auckland Hospital. On returning to her home, she gave valuable nurfiing aid to returned soldiers and when the influen- epidemic broke out in 1918 she volunteered for duty in the temporary hospital on the Hastings racecourse. She was to a large extent responsible for establishing a hospital in Hastings. The death occurred at Matangi on Monday of Mrs. Jessie Boyd, wife of Mr. William Boyd, a ’well-known settler in the district. Mrs. Boyd, who was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Kirk, of Castle Douglas, Scotland, came to New Zealand 17 years ago and had since lived at Matangi, where she was widely known and respected. She is survived by her husband, one son and one daughter.
Mr. W. E. Hird, M.A., headmaster of Te Aro School, who retired on completion of the school year • last week, was farewelled at a ceremony at the school last Saturday. Appreciative references to Mr. Hird’s services were made by Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., and Mr. L. Hennessey, chairman of the Te Aro School Association. A presentation was made. Mr. Hird is an old Manaia boy, and eldest son of Mrs. S. W. Hird, of Moturoa, New Plymouth. He was formerly head-< master of the Patea High School and Taihage High
