HAWERA MAIN SCHOOL BAND

SOLO COMPETITION DECIDED. GOOD STANDARD OF WORK. The finalist solo competitions of the Hawera Main school band were held in the Methodist Hall last night Eight performers who were recalled at a morning session played selections. The adjudicator (Mr. H. C. A. Fox) in his remarks said there was a tendency in the brass section to play in too stodgy a style. In the woodwind section two of the players had shown very excellent form and had been very difficult to separate. ■ ■ . :

At the conclusion of the selections a bouquet. was presented •• by one of the boys to the accompanist, Miss E. Rogers. Mr. T. Hurrell, the chairman of the school band committee, before presenting the prizes, remarked on the untiring efforts which Mr. Fox had made to further the success,of the band. For that work Mr. Fox was receiving an entirely inadequate remuneration. Mr. Hurrell appealed to parents to interest themselves in the band, which merited much more support than was commonly shown. The band was to visit Manaia: on Saturday.

Mr. J. Thomas, headmaster of the school, briefly eulogised the good work of Mr. Fox and Mr. Rupert George. Results of the competitions are:— . -. Junior section: S. Lord (bassoon).

Brass section: V. Anderson (cornet) T. Woodwind section: R. Haseltine (B flat clarinet) 1, also champion soloist and winner of Mr. A. Good’s medal; J. Carrel second and special prize for second championship performance. There were 16 entries in all.
