MANUTAHI SCHOOL CONCERT
END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS. PRESENTATION TO TEACHER. A good programme and the strong support accorded by the residents of the district combined to make the Manutahi school children’s concert, which was presented in the hall on Friday evening, a successful close to the year’s work. Thanks are due to Mrs. D. M. Jillett and Miss M. O’Sullivan for their assistance to the teachers in the preparation of the concert. Several items were of high merit, the playette by the junior pupils, the scene from the Merchant of Venice and the singing by the senior pupils being worthy of special mention. The stage was tastefully decorated with flowers provided by ladies of the district. The programme presented was as follows: Songs (“How Do You Do?” “Rio Grande” and “Drunken Sailor”), senior pupils; recitation (“Sea Fever,” Ray Penny; duet (“Hoea Ra”), Gwen and Rowland Southcombe; playette “Joan’s Party”), junior pupils; songs (“Shenandoah,” “Blow the Man Down” and “Capstan Bar”), senior pupils; musical drill, senior boys; songs (“New Zealand,” “Lisette,” “Little Sicilian Maid” and “Gentle Spring”), senior pupils; recitation (“Jonathan Jo”), Noel Schwass; scene from Shakespeare (“The Pound of Flesh”), senior pupils; songs (“The Piper,” “E Pari Ra,” “Poi Waka”), senior pupils; hoop drill, senior girls; dialogue (“That’s Good”), V. At the conclusion of the concert Mr. A. B. Muggeridge, chairman of the school committee, introduced Mr. Buckeridge, of Hawera, who presented the prizes. Mr. Buckeridge said it had given him great pleasure to listen to the children’s concert. The following prizes were presented: Cup for school making best effort in the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, 1931-32 season (presented to A. Muggeridge), the chairman of the school club; certificates won by pupils in the 1931 calf-rearing competition. M. Muggeridge N. Schwass, A. Muggeridge, W. Broadbent, M. Smart and R. In addition, good attendance certificates were presented and a gift book was given to each child, in the school. After the presentation of prizes Eric Penny called upon Olive Bills and Desmond Cornwall to present Miss E. Tapp with books of poems from the girls and boys respectively. Mr. D. M. Jillett, head teacher, also spoke expressing regret that Miss Tapp’s appointment had terminated. As the books of poems contairied many of the items in the evening’s programme he hoped they would remind her of the friendships she had made in Manutahi. After supper, which was provided by the ladies, dancing was carried on until an early hour. Miss M. O’Sullivan provided the music.
