ROTARY YEAR ENDS

HOPES FOR BRIGHTER FUTURE. As yesterday’s luncheon was the last to be held by the New Plymouth Rotary Club before Christmas, references were made to the season. . . The first to be remembered were the waitresses at the Devon tea rooms, - where the club holds its luncheons. On behalf .of the club, the president, Rotarian T. C. List, thanked them sincerely for tlie way they had cared for the members during the year. Rotarians,-he said, appreciated very much the attentions dnd kindnesses they, had been shown, and :as a tangible expression of their appreciation they desired each of the waitresses to accept a small gift. .- . The president thanked members of the club for the support they had given him as president. The weekly attendances, he said, had topped the list for New Zealand for the past two or three months ana bid fair to establish the club in first position for. the whole of the Dominion. The attendances had been extremely gratifying to him and other officers of the club. He wished tile members the compliments of the season and hoped that during the coming year the economic and financial clouds would roll by. . In any case,. he hoped that members and their families would be given health and happiness which, after all, counted more than material possessions. That was one" of the lessons of the depression. It brought out the true values and showed that happiness came from the simple things of life. One of the greatest of these was friendship, upon which the Rotary movement placed such importance. Friendship was a very precious thing, , and at no time than the present was it more valuable-and helpful. Later Rotarian R. W. D. Robertson conveyed the compliments of other members to their president, mentioning in doling so that the club had made gqod progress . during 'the past .term. ’Probably it had never made greater progress. . Iri acknowledging the good wishes of the members, Rotarian List said no tomber had. ever failed him when he had asked for a work to'be done or a service to be performed. The attendances and the help of the members ha<j been a great encouragement to him. He hoped that this time next year they could all feel they had passed the worst of their troubles and. had reached a stable basis oh which to build ’afresh. He concluded by paying a tribute to-Mr. W. L. Hay for his services as pianist during the year. j
