TARANAKI LOCAL BODIES
VALUE OF ASSOCIATION WAITARA COUNCIL DISCUSSION, POSSIBILITY OF WITHDRAWAL. Whether it. was worth while for the Waitara Borough Council to continue its membership of the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association was a question raised by the Mayor (Mr. J. Hine) at the council’s monthly meeting last night. After a short; discussion. on the value of the association to municipalities it was decided to defer consideration till a later meeting. Commenting on a copy of the minutes of the last meeting of the association received by the council, Mr. Hine said he had not attended the meeting as it had dealt merely with by-laws. “It is my own opinion,” continued Mr. Hine, “that we might as well withdraw from the association. It is almost a counties association, and as far as this council is concerned we belong to the Municipal Association as well. Sometimes the Taranaki Local Bodies’ Association is definitely antagonistic to our interests.” Councillor T. B. Ewens asked whether a subsidy would be lost if the council withdrew. The Mayor pointed out that they had to pay a subscription to the association, but they did not receive any revenue from the association itself.
