WOMAN ADMITS 40 CHARGES
GAOL TERM FOR SHOPLIFTING. “WORST THIEF EVER IN COURT.” By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 13. ‘ “I think I am safe in saying that this woman is about the worst thief who has ever appeared in this court,” said the police this morning, referring to Leonie Evelyn McMahon, aged 29, book-keeper, alias Norah Purcell, who pleaded guilty to 40 charges, mostly of shoplifting. She was sentenced to three years’ reformative treatment. The magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, said a woman like accused, who had no moral sense, was absolutely a menace to the community. Goods had been stolen in various leading shops over a period of 11 months, and handbags had also been stolen from two churchgoers in church.
