Giving evidence before the Royal Commission on taxation, Mr. McMahon, State Income Tax Commissioner, disclosed the effects of the depression on the number of taxpayers in New South Wales and the amount of tax assessed. Mr. McMahon’s figures showed that in 1928 the number of taxpayers was 140,576 and the amount of tax assessed £8,282,461, compared with 81,362 taxpayers and £5,026,890 tax assessed in 1931.
