TEST MATCH COMMENT
RANJITSINHJI’S CRITICISM. PRAISE FOR PATAUDI. London, Dec. 6. Ranjitsinhji, in the Sketch, congratulating Pataudi on his score in the first test match, declares him to be the soundest bat in the team, possessing more strokes than his colleagues, and yet he has been described, as not of test class. Emphasising that much in the future depends on Larwood, Ranjitsinhji doubts his ability to stay out all the tests. He requires nursing and Jardine’s continual changes betray anxiety for his bowlers’ stamina. The .writer expects Mitchell and Bowes to be useful before the rubber is over; and suggests Ponsford and.Woodfull are
now in the unenviable, position of playing for places, but both should do better on their, home ground. Moreover experience has proved that Australians, especially the bowlers, improve , as the . season proS “Bowlers, even if unsuccessful, never waste .their time before always taking stock of the batsmen’s weaknesses, he savs.: “and' O’Reilly and Nagel, owing to inexperience, did not attack Hammond s leg stump enough. That oversight will not occur again.” ' Other critics believe that Oldfield and Grimmett are. past their prime, and that Ironmonger ought to play m Melbourne.
