Anxiety, over the position of the fishing industry is expressed by Mr. S. Ensor, Mayor of Thames. Approximately 1400 tons of fish are sent yearly from Thames and Mercury Bay to as far south as Wellington, and to Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay. Mr. Ensor considers that the fishing industry is suffering from, the depression as much as the farmers are, owing to the low prices. The return that fishermen receive for their catches is below what they can profitably carry on with, and as a result boats are being tied up and the men are.going on relief work.
