FATE OF OLD WOOL

GOOD DEMAND AT NAPIER. PRICES EQUAL NEW SEASON’S. Held-over wool offered at the Napier wool sale on Tuesday did not suffer in price in comparison with the new season’s fleece of the same type and description. This view was expressed to-day by a Gisborne representative of the wool industry who. visited ~apier for the sale. He said that, speaking generally, old wool sold on a par with new season’s, and anything of good quality sold wonderfully well, considering the general trend of the sale. For Gisborne growers the prices were disappointing. The demand was mainly for the finer wools of 48’s and over. Gisborne grows some of the 48’s count, and up to 50’s, but the general average in the district is from 44’s to 46’s. Wool of 46’s and under did not meet a generally good demand, and even those wools that were bright and clean in every way were erratic, and usually selling at a low rate. ; Two of the big German buyers who were ■ expected to lift the bulk of the lower grades of wool were silent at Napier, and, with little competition, these sorts suffered. severely. New wool was affected along with the old fleece. Pieces and bellies were the dearest types of wool at the sale, because there was a keen demand for them, with several buyers operating., , This year’s clip was one of the best seen at Napier for a . long time, but, at times it was difficult to tell by the appearance and feel of the. wool which was last: year’s clip and which was that of the present season. In; many cases the bales containing held-over clips were discoloured, but the wool itself was not, and it mostly • opened- up in good condition, apparently none the worse for storage. . Wool was arriving at the Napier stores rapidly, it'was ■ added, and the offering at . the January sale should be large.
