EXTRA.PATROLS AT STRATFORD.- J V • ■*- *■ ■ ‘ . “ — -..1. , ■ ■■» , .». '7 : : COUNCIL DEBATES NECESSITY. , ' . ■ ; " .j.t' The Stratford Racing Club’s request .1 Ithat the 'usual six men be employed on ; traffic'control for the ..race meeting, the club to pay two of the men, was grant- ■ ed by the Stratford - Borough Council ■'■> last night. ' ■ . Councillor A. H. Trotter.’ opposed the application for four men > r There "was not another town, in New: Zealand that went toso-much'trouble over race, traffic, he said. He did not . think the extra men employed last year were of much use. One extra man might be of, value but he did not think the. council should pay for more men. The club should pay for extra patrols if it wanted them. He moved that , four men be provided, the club to pay for three. Councillor R. F. Harkness moved an amendment that the request be granted and the club and the council each 'em-} ploy two men additional to the two boroygh inspectors. \ It was only a wise precaution to have. ,the extra/men, said Cr. A. J. Davey in speaking for the amendment. The chairman (Cr. C. R. Finnerty) ton-' sidered it would be unwise, for the council to take ;the risk of an accident justto save two men’s wages for'two days. The amendment was carried by seven votes to two. ' ■
