BRAVED THE “TANIWHA”
MAORI RECOVERS BOY’S BODY.
Raglan, Nov. 30.
In connection with the accident in which the boy Athol James Pooley, aged seven years, was drowned while bathing in a creek near Raglan, it has been pointed out that the Maori, Tommy Wahanga, did a very brave tiring in recovering the body. In his evidence at the inquest he said it was well known by the Maoris that a taniwha lived in the deep hole, and was responsible for the drowning. By the manner" in which he gave evidence it could be seen that he really believed in the taniwha, yet despite his fears of the supernatural hejumped in, and remained in until he had recovered the body.
Dorothy May Cowley, aged seven years, said that when she and other children went in to bathe Athol jumped into a deep hole, saying he could dive. She told him it was dangerous. She did not see him come up again. She went tor help and told a Maori man that Athol was under the water,
