GOVERNMENT FEARS DEFEAT
ASSISTANCE TO WHEAT-GROWERS. CHALLENGE IN THE SENATE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Canberra, Nov. 30. Concern is felt by the Government at the possibility of defeat in the Senate on the proposals for assistance to the wheat industry. Cabinet, in spite of much hostile opposition, has decided to adhere firmly to the proposal that £2,000,000 be paid the States on the basis of last year’s production figures, and that it must be distributed solely as a benefit to necessitous growers. The Government under no circumstances will allow it to be paid in the form of a bounty.
