KILLING BY NON-UNIONISTS
WORK RESUMES AT WELLINGTON.
MANY UNIONIST APPLICANTS.
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night.
Killing commenced to-day at the Gear Meat Company’s works and at Ngahaurangft and is progressing satisfactorily. At Ngahauranga there were over 100 applications for work on the board; 42 men were engaged. A chain gang system was instituted. At first only men who had previously used the knife were put on but later the remainder of unskilled men were set to work. The management was pleased with the result. The dressing was not perfect but was much better than anticipated. Union labour was freely offering in other departments apart from slaughtering. A number of men applied for work at the Gear company’s works and, killing proceded satisfactorily. About half the applicants were union men and there were sufficient hands to dispose of the yardings. It is’ understood that the Dominion conference yesterday between representatives of the freezing workers and the companies proved abortive. Work is proceeding satisfactorily at the Kaiti freezing works, says a Gisborne message, the killings averaging over 4000 a day. Eighty-two slaughtermen are at work, 59 being non-unionists. There is no dearth of applicants.
