ON HARD AND LAWN COURT

WANGANUI MATCH NOT FIXED » ■■ ’ - RANKING OF SISTER • ASSOCIATION. • L . \ . ... .. j ‘ .. NORTH TARANAKI CLUB AVTIVITY

(By

“Half Volley.”)

No further advice has been received from the Wanganui association in confirmation of the proposed match with Taranaki on December 10. Until it is known definitely whether Wanganui will be able to send a team to - New Plymouth, the Taranaki selectors will not consider the choosing of the Taranaki team. .

The Wanganui association has finalised its ranking list for . the commencement of the season, the players being ranked on their form of last season. Though the positions on the men’s ladder are fairly clear-cut, so far as numbers one and two are concerned, the committee found the task of deciding on number three so difficult that they compromised by bracketing five players in that position in alphabetical order. Fourteen players in all are included on the men’s list. S. Powdrell and Mesdames Smith and Richardson have not been ranked as they did not play last season. Following is the ranking list:— Men: (1) A. L. Wheeler (Marton), (2) D. W. Earle (Wanganui), (*) N. B. Barkman (St; John’s), (*) H. Cox (St. John’s), (*) M. L. Lampe (St. John’s), (*) K. Farlane (Wanganui East), (*) L. Uudy (St. John’s), (8) W. Hay Campbell (Wanganui), (9) J. S. Shaw (Wanganui), (10) J. Powdrell (Wanganui), (11) E. Ogier (St. John’s), (12) C. Moulder (Wanganui), . (13) J. Anderson (Wanganui East), (14) J. E. Marshall (St. John’s). (*) Bracket for third position.

Ladies: (1) Miss Mary Purcell (St. John’s), (2) Miss J. Izard (Wanganui), (3) Miss M. Latham (Wanganui), (4)> Miss T. Cox (St. John’s), (5) Miss I. Duncan (Wanganui E.), (6) Mrs. J. Dempsey (St. John’s), (7) Miss G. Gais-

ford (Marton),, (8), Miss Wilkie (Marton), (9) Mrs. E. Ogier . (St. John’s), (10) Mrs. R. Anderson (Wanganui E.). Strombom Still on Top. » C. H. Des Forges (Pukekura Park) was decisvely beaten by C. Strombom (New Plymouth) in an attempt to win top place on the North Taranaki ladder during the week-end. The score was 6—l, 6—2. Play was more even in the first set than the scores indicate, but in the second set Des Forges appeared to be rattled and played nothing like the game he can play, giving a very disappointing display* The court was a little deader than usual and Strombom playing steadily and placing accurately was putting to the base line balls that Dea Forges seemed to have difficulty with. Des Forges was unable to exploit his usual style of game and Strombom was able to get into the net repeatedly. Des Forges when he put up lobs was short with them and Strombom was very severe with any smashes. Ballantyne Displaes' Lobb. D. Ballantyne succeeded in wresting the third place on the ladder from M. Lobb (New Plymouth) 6 —3, 6—l. Ballantyne was previously fifth on the ladder but moved up .to fourth with the withdrawal of J. S. Leggat (Waiwaka). Both players began very well, driving with accuracy and speed but in the sixth game Lobb . double-faulted several times and from then on went right off his game, while Ballantyne steadied up and sent. over . short stuff without its usual sting, that did' not bounce high enough for Lobb to stroke in his usual manner. Continually. Lobb skimmed the net' with- a drive that was inches out at the base line. Ballantyne effected returns from almost impossible shots and when he- was really out of position Lobb would miss his chance by placing tile ball outside the court or into the net. The standard of play was

not particularly high and both players will have to improve to be really deserving of a place in the Taranaki team, for which they are possibilities. Other Ladder Matches. Other North Taranaki ladder matches played have not affected the platings of players. K. Tompkins (New Plymouth) challenged C. Little (Park) for eighth place and was defeated 6—l, 11—9. G. L. Wells (New Plymouth) challenged T. Dickson (Park) for 12th place and lost 6—l, 9—7. R. Ninkie (Rotokare) failed to find a place on the ladder, losing to S. White (Waiwaka) 6—l, 6—2. On the ladies’ ladder Miss G. Baunton (Park) challenged Miss D. Lobb (New Plymouth) for seventh place but was defeated 6—5, 6—3. Challenges pending are: L. Christie (New Plymouth) v. W. Rutherford (Waiwaka) for fifth place; D. Ballantyne (New Plymouth) v. C. H. Des Forges (New Plymouth) for second; T. Dickson (Park) v. E. Griffiths (New Plymouth) for eleventh; IC. Little (Park) v.
