ATHLETIC LEAGUE EVENTS

EVENING SPORTS AT THE PARK. The New Plymouth Cycling and Athletic League’s second evening sports meeting was held at Pukekura Park last night. Improvement was shown in the entries fcr all events, particularly the B grade cycling. Officials and spectators were present in good numbers. The results- are:— ■> •

Gillies (75) and N. Bellringer (45). Fenton led for 1J laps. Tuffery came around Fenton anrl Hookham to win by inches from Beer, who finished fast and beat Fenton by a small margin. 100 yards handicap: W. Aubrey (11yds.). I, A. Low (12) 2, G. Fowler (7) 3. Time, 10 l-ss. Also started: S. Rodgers (12), A. Reeve (12), N. Gordon (14). A very close finish, inches separating the placed men. Half-mile B grade cycle: Doug. George (15yds.) 1, B. Stafford led for 1J lap?, when George, left the rest of the field, took the lead and won easily by 15 yards, Berryman beating Fenton by inches for second place.;- . 220 yards running: W. Two-mile cycle, A grade: N. Bellringer, (160yds.) 1, T. Hookham (140) 2, A. Ellis (80) 3. Time, sm. 575. Also started: D. Beer’(100), H. Eva (180), G. Tuffery (240), Berryman (240), T. Fenton (260), N. Knight (350). The field soon bunched, resulting in a slow race. Tuffery and Ellis stirred the pace up with two laps to go, and Tuffery led at the beginning of the last lap, but Bellringer finished best and won by three lengths, Hookham beating Ellis by inches for second place* 600 yards running: N. Gordon (100yds.) 1, A. Low (60) 2, G. Fowler (55) 3. Time,, Im. 41 4-s’s. Also started: G. Sole (100), W. Aubrey (70), J. Gillies (70), S. Rodgers (75), A. Reeve (75). Won easily, a close race for second place.

Boys’ races were won by A Moss (100 yds.) and G. Moss (380yds. walk). The position in the competition for the running points-prize is: Aubrey 6, Fowler 4, Low 4, Gordon 3, Rodgers 1.

Next week’s races will be three-quar-. ter-mile handicap in the B grade, three-quarter-mile and one and a half miles in the A grade and an open two-mile points scratch race. .
