CARPENTERS AND JOINERS

DISCUSSION OF NEW AWARD.

WAGES REDUCTION SOUGHT.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Wellington, Last Night.

Conciliation proceedings in the dispute between the New Zealand Federated Builders’ and Contractors’ Industrial Association and the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners commenced to-day on a Dominion basis before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. W. Newton. Mr. W. J. Mountjoy appeared as the employers’ advocate and Mr. T. Bloodworth for the employees. A reduction of the wages for carpenters, joiners and joiners’ machinists to 2s an hour was asked by the employers, while the employees asked for the old rate of 2s 3fd an hour. It was agreed that a worker responsible for the carrying out of work and who gives instructions to the workers receive not less than Is a day extra. The employers asked for a 44-hour week and the employees for 40 hours. Argument is proceeding.

The employers finally offered a net rate of Is lid, but declined to depart from the original offer with regard to overtime rates and holiday pay. Some minor concessions regarding general conditions were offered. The union will consider the offer and give a reply when the conference resumes to-morrow.
