Dr. Eleanor Baker-McLaglen, of the Health Department, arrived at New Plymouth yesterday morning to relive Dr. R. J. R. Mecredy, medical officer of health for the Taranaki district, who is at Hanmer on account of his health. The Rev. Clarence Eaton is in a private hospital at New Plymouth to undergo a minor operation.
Mr. G. V. Tate, Waitara, who became suddenly ill on Friday, is reported to be showing an improvement.
Sergeant-Major J. S. King, of the New Plymouth defence staff, left on Monday for Wellington to attend a three weeks’ refresher course for the staff of the central military command.
Mr. A. T. Wells, receiver of the Mental Hospitals Department, Wellington, is at New Plymouth on departmental business.
Mr. P. J. Flannagan returned to New Plymouth yesterday after four months stay in Australia, He was accompanied by the well-known sportsmen Messrs Bert Pampilon and H. Spry, Melbourne. Mr. F. W. Furkert, Wellington, is at present a visitor to Wanganui, where he is inspecting harbour works in order to report upon certain improvement proposals now under the consideration of the board. Mr. Furkert arrived on Sunday night from Gisborne and Napier. He will be in Wanganui several days before proceeding south.
Captain Thomas Jones, Ilford, died aboard the Port Wellington, of which he was commander, on the eve of the ship’s departure for Australia, states a London cable. He served during the Great War as a naval transport officer on the Admiralty Pier, Dover, and from 1917 till the Armistice was commodore of convoys between Liverpool and Port Said.
