POPULARITY AT NEW PLYMOUTH. WEEKLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. The increased numbers of competitors and of spectators at the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club’s weekly meeting on the Pukekura Park sportsground last evening again demonstrated' that the sport is making solid progress in New Plymouth this season. All the events were well contested. The finishes were especially close in the 440 yards flat and the 120 yards hurdles.

Results are:— , „ « 120 yards hurdles:—First heat: R. Boucher (12yds, 2 down) 1, G. Sullivan (syds, 1 down) 2; time, 17 2-ss. Second heat- H. F. Fookes (3yds, 1 down) 1, S. G. Dinniss (12yds, 2 down) 2; time, 17 l-ss. Final: G. Sullivan and R. Boucher 1 H. F. Fookes 3; time, 17 l-ss. ’Half-mile cycle: C. B. Olliver (55yds) 1 A. J. Burr (55yds) 2, C. Hawkins (35yds) 3; time, Im. 9 2-ss. Olliver was soon in charge and led all the way to win by a length, with the rest of the field close. 50 yards ladies: Miss N. Clarke (6yds) 1, Miss B. Bigwood (syds) 2, Miss N, Beale (7yds) 3; time, 7s. Won easily, inches between second and third. 440 yards junior: C. Hoskin (20yds) 1, J. Carroll (scr) 2, J. Outred (15yds) 3; time, 575. Hoskin, running strongly, always had the race in safe keeping, though Carroll made a game effort to reach him St the end. • 440 yards senior: C. Evans (50yds) 1, R. Boucher (50yds) and H. L. Thomson (25yds) 2; time, 51 2-ss. Evans was the first to get going but Jackson ran, through to the front after going 50 yards. Evans took charge again 100 yards from the post and looked like winning easily when Courtney, Boucher and Thomson all challenged. In a great finish ; Evans lasted long enough to win by a foot from Thomson and Boucher, who dead-heated for second. Ladies’ relay, 440 yards: Miss R. Jones’ team (Misses R. Jones, N. Clarke, B. Bigwood and M. Reilly) 1. One mile run: L. E. Fox (100yds) 1, A. J. Thompson (100yds) 2, V. Hodgson (100yds) 3; time, 4m. 36 4-ss. S. Black was a starter but retired after two and a-half laps. Fox and Thompson were together commencing the final circuit. Fox’s superior condition stood to him and he won by about 10 yards. One mile cycle: N. C. Batten (45yds) 1, C. Hawkins (75yds) 2, R. L. Reed (35yds) 3; time, 2m. 275. The backmarkers (Reed and Batten) were up with the field after going two laps. Batten made a fast move and took the lead commencing the final circuit. Though hotly challenged by Hawkins in the run home he prevailed by half a wheel. Reed was a fair third.

Putting the shot: R. Boucher (lift 3in) 37ft 4in 1, H. L. Thomson (6ft Bin) 37ft lin 2, H. V. Hogg (2ft) 36ft 4in 3.
