FEILDING RACES TO-DAY

FINE FIELDS ENGAGED LADY QUEX’S STAKES’ PROSPECTS. GRAND JURY AND TIGERISM. (Sy “Hurry On.”) The spring meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club is always a popular one, and the fixture that opens to-day looks well’ up to the standard of its predecessors. All the fields have filled exceptionally well and the class of horse engaged is up to metropolitan standard. The day will open with the

Manuiri is the class hurdler of this lot, but Just an Idea should be all the better for the race he had at Waverley. Manifesto appears rather unreliable, but both Red Bank and Laokoon are useful at their best. Okapua will be finishing on, but he does not seem able to hold his place in the early stages. Day Lass won. at Levin but there was not a great deal of merit in that performance. The issue appears very open, but Manuiri, Okapua and Day Lass may be best sup-

Few of these engaged here have much form in public. Maypay has shown pace at times, while Boon has displayed some promise. Grand Joy was a fair sort of a two-year-old and if produced in good order will carry good money. Vaudeville, Senegal and Chief Line are possibilities, but the public will probably ' pin their faith to Grand Joy, Maypay and Boon.

This is .a really good field and all the runners should be well-conditioned and ready. for the fray. Cluny, the topweight, accounted for Fast Passage at Trantham, and though he was a trifle lucky that form was good. Chopin is .as honest as they are made and he showed at Levin that he still retains his form. Arrow Lad seldom goes a bad race on. this course and was second last year. Arikira’s barrier manners are too uncertain to give him a chance.' Grand Jury’s fine second to Refresher at Waverley represents good fotm, and this son of Grandcourt will be hard to beat. High Falutin’ may need the race, and the same applies to My Own. Spearful does not appear to be back to the form that won a New Zealand Cup for him a year ago, but he is improving. Little Doubt can be passed over, but La Moderne’s showings at Riccarton suggest that thia filly will be there in t>e final furlong. Gay Court has won at his last two starts and seems to be “coming good’’ at last. Shrewd has a knack of springing a surprise, but Tigerism, who has been working well at New Plymouth, may prove the best of the light-weight division. This is sure to be a great* betting race, with Grand Jury, Tigerism and La Modeme the actual favourites. .

Lady .Quex after her good win at Takapuna, looks like seeing a very short price here. Most opposition may come frdm Midinette, who has been galloping very well at Wanganui of late.

This is a big field for the turning course, and a horse will need to get a position early to have a winning chance. Constant Sun ran well at Waverley when not nearly ready, and he has usually shown his best on the Feilding track. Arikitea is still improving, and is a good beginner. Riccarton running ppints strongly to the prospects of Aga Khan, who was always finishing on. The Hawke’s Bay Chock Say is reported to be well above the average, while lower, down Bee Acre and Cape Fair are a dangerous pair of light-weights. Speculation is sure to take a wide range, but Aga Khan, Constant Sun and BOe Acre will all have good followings.

The top-weight, Arisus, usually requires a race or two before being seen at, his best, and Orapai should hold him safe. Consent also will have to improve a lot on Wanganui running to beat the New Plymouth representative. Aston, does not appear to have regained his form, of last season, but Royal Routine .is well and shows his best on this course. All Humbug and Knollmere are a smart pair of sprinters, who are due any time now. Though Royal Bengal has not run qne decent race since he beat Fast Passage at Trentham in July, there is an impression that an improvement may be. looked for any time now. Levin running points to Sir Pomba] putting up a. good race. Nevertheless the form horse is Orapai, but Knollmere . nd Royal Bengal may press him hard.

Both Aiguille and Gold Gleam won so easily at Levin on Saturday that their chances here must be rated, highly, more especially as both are likely to have been improved as a result of their outing. Haulbowline has plenty of pace, and despite the fact that he will be having his first race for some time, he is sure to be with the leaders all the way. Farmer, Good Hunting and Merry Way will all have admirers, but Gold Gleam, Aiguille and Haulbowline are likely to fight the finish.

style and usually races well when fresh. At her best she is a class above the others. Fiji does not seem too reliable, but he is a good beginner. The distance may trouble Aston, but Habit, Richfield and La Poupee should all show up. If

reserved for this event Tigerism would be favourite, but he also figures in the cup. Of the remainder Orby’s Choice and Dick Whittington, the latter of whom will be all the better for his race at Levin, will have friends. This race has provided many surprises in the past, but in the absence of Tigerism, Habit, Awaken and Orby’s Choice will be favoured. - •’
