A LONE RECORD.
Only a few days ago one of the most interesting and sporting of records was performed by Captain Yate Benyon, who started overland on July 4 from London to race the British Indian steamship Manora to Calcutta. He drove alone; his car was only a little 10 horse-power Hillman Minx; he covered 6SOO _ odd miles at an average of 207 miles in 33 days; he reached the confines of IndiaQuetta—at the , same time that the steamship reached Calcutta; and..-his effort, performed in a 10 horse-power car, constitutes a record far in advance of anything of the kind up-to-date and very hard to beat. Certainly he was beaten by the ship. Probably he never expected to win, but regarded his rival as a “pace-maker," to keep him up to his task; but let anyone try to lower his record in what is practically a baby car over Yugo-Slavian, Turkish and Persian roads (Heaven forgive the .word!), and he will appreciate the magnitude of the achievement. Quite frankly, how Captain Benyon and his little' Minx stood up to it we do not know. All honour to them both. —Reprinted from The Times* London August T 9, " _ . - ' • i
