COMPARATIVE RETURNS GIVEN.

SECTION CHAIRMEN MEET.

To review the recent show and to make recommendations designed to make improvements wherever possible for the next show, chairmen of sections of the Stratford A. and P. Association met last night. Mr. A. David presided. The various chairman reported on the sections under their charge, and the statements were all of a favourable nature except for a few minor matters that were referred to the executive.

Mr. David said he considered the show was held under ideal conditions and was highly successful in view of the times. The figures prepared by the secretary were quite satisfactory, and it would be seen that receipts from gates and for space showed increases over those of last year. Details of receipts and expenditure, with the comparative figures for 1931 in parentheses, are: Receipts: Gates first day, £l9, second day £337 (£l7 and £309); space, £73, outstanding £3B, total £lll (£94); catalogues and advertising, £5l (£64); luncheon rooms, £ll6 (£125); weight-guessing, £l9 (£22); donations, £77 (£74). Expenditure: Gates, parking and droving, £37 (£38); labour luncheon rooms, £7 (£9); kiosk, £4 (£7); sundry labour and expenses, £l3 6s. (£l3 65.); totals, £62 (£6B).

Thomson yesterday afternoon in aid of St. Andrew’s Church funds. The weather favoured the funcl tion, which was a pleasant and successful one. The croquet lawn was available for those who wished to play. Mrs. Ross and Mrs. North were in charge of the lawn. Stall-holders were: Cake stall, Mesdames Nowell and Armstrong; sweets, Misses Martin and Brown; ice cream, Mesdames Sayers and Brice and Miss Hamilton. All present, including the children, spent a happy afternoon. The hostess, Mrs. Thomson, had left no stone unturned to make the function a success. PERSONAL. Mr. C. Wright has returned to Stratford after spending a holiday with his son at Hastings. The death occurred yesterday at Hawera of Mrs. R. Grenfell, Eltham. She recently underwent a serious operation following an illness. Mrs. Grenfell leaves a husband, son and daughter. Mr. P. Keller, district engineer of the Public Works Department, Stratford, left yesterday for Wellington on official business. GENERAL ITEMS. ] Primary schools in Taranaki will close 1 for the Christmas holidays on Friday, i December 16, and will re-open on Wed- : nesday, February 1. ; A six-roomed house on Monmouth 1 Road, Stratford, owned and occupied by J Mr. T. Perrett, was completely burned { at about 1 a.m. yesterday. Only two 1 chimneys remained standing in a mass 1 of debris. The family was awakened by * the noise of the fire and quickly left 1 the house, but was unable to do any- 1 thing to save it. Nearby trees were I scorched by the heat, for the house f blazed furiously in the strong wind. The 1 dwelling and the contents were partly insured. .

The Stratford Methodist Sunday school celebrations ended on Monday night, when a large number of children and adults was present for the tea and afterwards at the concert. Presented by the Sunday school scholars, the concert was a very successful and entertaining function. Certificates gained last June by Alice O’Carroll and Myrtle Sorenson in the Sunday school examination, were presented by the Rev. T. Skuse.

The tennis court at Lowgarth was completed yesterday. The Stratford Motor Sports Club on Monday appointed the following officials to control the climbing tests: Call stewards, Messrs. T. Hamilton and C. Burton; track stewards, Messrs. W. Pettigrew' and C. Jury; starter, Mr. H. Joyes; finishing flag officer, Mr. _ Clem Power; time-keepers, Messrs. J. Vickers, E. Pugh and E. P. Pridham; traffic officers, Messrs. M. Moore and C. Potts.

WRESTLING BOUTS AT STRATFORD.

As preliminaries to the professional meeting of the wrestlers Hughie McLaughlin (Australian middleweight champion) and Lew Naylor (New Zealand middleweight champion) in the Stratford Town Hall to-morrow, the following amateur bouts have been arranged:— P. Jones (Toko) 10.7 v. Blair (Okaiawa) 10.7.
