SHOPKEEPER GOVERNOR DANIEL BUCKLEY APPOINTED ADVICE ACCEPTED BY KING GREAT SURPRISE CAUSED FORMERLY NOTABLE REBEL By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. Dublin, Nov. 26. Mr. Daniel Buckley, a shopkeeper and an ex-member of the Dail, has been appointed Governor-General of the Irish Free State. A communique states: “His Majesty has appointed Mr. Buckley on the advice of the Free State Executive.” The appointment came as a tremendous surprise, but Mr. Buckley is esteemed by all classes. He recently retired, transferring his shop to a son. The new Governor-General, who succeeds Mr. James McNeill, is closely interested in national movements, especially the revival of the Irish language. He participated in the rebellion of 1916 and organised the “Small Red Band of volunteers and marched on Dublin. He was arrested and deported, being released at the Christmas amnesty. He was elected deputy for Kildare and voted against the acceptance of the .Anglo-Irish treaty. He was defeated at the 1931 election. * .
