HOLIDAY PAY

MEN ON RELIEF SCHEMrss. Instructions have been issued by the Unemployment Board concerning the method to be adopted in making payment to workers under the No. 5 scheme for the two weeks at Christmas during which no work will be done. The board decided some weeks ago to suspend all work under the No. 5 scheme during the weeks ending December 31 and January 7, and to pay the ordinary relief rates to the men who would ordinarily have been eligible to work during those weeks. Payments for these two weeks are to be made in the week ending Decmber 24. In the circular which it has issued to certifying officers and local bodies acting as employing authorities, the board explains that it has decided to make payment for these two weeks, although no work will be done, in order to assist relief workers over the Christmas and New Year holiday period and to meet the convenience of local employing authorities in overcoming the difficulties which would arise in regard to administration, supervision and transport. It is stated that the allocation for each of these two weeks will be made on the usual basis and will have to be distributed by the local authorities among the eligible unemployed in the usual way, except that no work will require to be performed. In no case will payment be made to men for ordinary stand-down periods coming within these dates. In some cases, particularly in some of the relief camps, arrangements had been made to work extra time each week so that the men would have something extra to draw when they were laid off for the holidays. This plan will not now be necessary, but the board has undertaken that where any extra time has been worked in anticipation of the holiday period, such time will be allowed to stand to the worker’s credit against any time lost after the holiday period. _
