CHARGE OF BODILY HARM

SULLIVAN AGAIN REMANDED. . POLICE ASK FOR SURETIES. 1 Charged with causing actual bodily harm to Veronica McKelliget at .New Plymouth on November 3, James Sullivan again appeared before Mr. R. W. Tate, S.M., at New Plymouth yesterday and was further remanded until Saturday: morning. In asking for a ramand for a month Detective Meiklejohn requested that bail should be fixed. He recalled that at the previous hearing no sureties were stipulated and Sullivan was released on his own recognisances. However, the police now felt that sureties must be produced. It' would be some time before the woman was in a condition to give evidence.

In agreeing that a remand was necessary Mr. J. H. Sheat said he understood it might be considerably longer than a month before the woman could give evidence.- Referring to bail, counsel said that it was fixed at the first hearing. The magistrate said bail was fixed, but tho provision for sureties was afterwards withdrawn and Sullivan was released ‘ on his own recognisance. ' .Sheat said: he had not gone on with, steps to obtain sureties, so that the present request of the police that they should be obtained placed Sullivan in a very awkward position. Counsel had tried on Friday to find bondsmen, but had not gone further in the matter. The magistrate. expressed the opinion t£ sureties were necessary.

Mr. Sheat suggested that it would stable hjm to find bondsmen if Sullivan were remanded until Saturday, instead

of a .month, with the provision that he should report to the police daily. This proposal was accepted by Mr. Meiklejohn and the magistrate, made an order accordingly, bail being fixed as before.
