HAWERA REST ROOM OPENED

GENEROSITY OF LATE MR. SYME.

BEQUEST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. “This occasion marks an epoch in the activities of the Hawera borough and must surely be a proud moment for the members of the Syme family) said Mr. E. A. Pacey (Mayor) in declaring open the new Syme Memorial Women s Rest Room in the water tower grounds at Hawera yesterday. The generosity of the late Mr. George Svme, sen., had been manifested by a gift of £5OO 'to (he borough council, said Mr. Pacey. The council gave a great deal of thought to the finding of a deserving purpose for which the donation could be used. There was not enough to build a town hall, and too much for a monument or similar structure, so the council conferred with the ladies of the Women’s National Reserve and suggested the establishment of a rest room in keeping with other _ appointments of the town. After considering a number of sites the one on which the building was erected was decided upon as the best an_d most convenient. The Women’s National Reserve members would have charge of the rooms, and their ingenuity would be tazed to provide for their upkeep. 'They hoped to have the rooms open every day. He felt sure the money could not have been used to better purpose, and he congratulated all responsible for the fine appearance of the rooms and the furnishings. There was an attendance of about 50 at the. ceremony, including several members of , the Syme family. Apologies were received from Mr. George Syme, who was in hospital, and Mr. Walter Syme, who was absent from Hawera. Victorian posies, made by Mrs. J. C. Hobbs, were presented on behalf of the Women’s Reserve to Mrs. E. A. Pacey (Mayoress) and Miss Syme, who turned the key of th*e front door. An inspection of the building was made by those present, after which afternoon tea was served by a committee of ladies directed by Mesdames F. Rae and G. Harding.
