EFFECTS OF DISAGREEMENTS.

The notice contained in the Gazette of the cancellation of six more industrial awards owing to the inability ,of the employers and .workers to agree in conciliation council brings the total number of awards cancelled in this manner to 36. An- amendment to the Arbitration Act made earlier this year provided that if the parties to an industrial agreement under the Act could not agree the Conciliation Commissioner was to make a declaration to. that effect and the award would automatically expire one month after the date of the declaration.

Following is a list of the awards that have been cancelled: Dominion engineers; moulders, boilermakers, iron-ship and bridge-builders; motor mechanics; Wellington butchers; Northern labourers (ironworkes); Otago and Southand (west and south-of Molyneux RivOr and including- ’ Stewart -Island) timberyards and sawmills’ employees; northern (except Gisborne) tinrberyards and sawmills’ employees; ’Westland and Canterbury metal-workers’ assistants. Wellington freezing workers and related trades employees; Wellington shearers and shed hands; Gisborne shearers and shed hands; New Zealand licensed hotel employees; New Zealand private hotel employees; Canterbury taxi-drivers; Otago and' Southland freezing workers; Canterbury shearers and shed hands; North Canterbury hairdressers’ assistants . (female workers); Canterbury clerks/ cashiers and office

employees (implement manufacturers); Northern, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago and Southland biscuit and confectionery manufacturing employees.
