GOOD FEELING AMONG CHURCHES.

The good feeling that existed among all denominations in the pioneering days is exemplified in the early history of St. Mary’s parish. The Presbyterian Church in particular showed the Anglicans great courtesy. In 1877 there were only two streets in Hawera, High Street and Princes Street. But the original town hall had been built and three churches had been established, the Roman Catholic, Wesleyan and Presbyterian. Owing to the kindness of the Presbyterian people, their Minister, the Rev. J. Torry, and Mrs. Torry,. the Anglicans of the township were given the use of the Presbyterian building for their services.' Indeed so great was the bond that many church of that period still affectionately count themselves “half Presbyterian.” The same kindly feeling existed between' all denominations.
