SUICIDES FROM BRIDGE

DISCUSSION IN SYDNEY.

“WEAPON OF RIDICULE.”

Aiderman Hardy, at a recent meeting of the North Syduey Municipal Council, directed attention to the number of suicides from the harbour bridge. Unless' steps were taken to safeguard demented people, he said, the bridge would soon gain an unenviable reputation. He suggested the posting of police at intervals along the bridge. They would be much more usefully employed there, he declared, than in directing people to the right or left in Pitt Street. Aiderman Hunter suggested that the council should use the weapon of ridicule. A spring-board, he said, could be placed at some convenient' spot, with a notice directing the attention of. the public- to its position, and indicating a charge of Is a head for those wishing to use it. The Mayor said that the Government’s attention had been directed to the matter.
