ELTHAM TENNIS OPENING

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The Eltham Lawn Tennis Club, after several postponements,. held its opening day on Thursday in perfect weather. There was a good attendance of members, and a number of visitors were present. In declaring the courts open, Dr. S. W. Crawford, president of the club, welcomed the visitors. He was delighted, he said, to see that the courts had responded to treatment and were now probably in 'better playing condition than they had ever been. A progressive tournament was played, and the men’s division was won by Mr. Patterson, Kaponga. Miss D. Jones and Miss Patterson tied for the ladies’ competition, Miss Jones eventually receiving the prize. NGAERE RIFLE CLUB SHOOT. The Ngaere Miniature Rifle Club held a shoot in the Ngaere Hall on Thursday night, a good muster of members being present. Results are (possible 100): Cookson 95, N. Coleman 95, R. Jury 94, J. The matter of beautifying the tongue of land on the northern bank of the Patea River just below the railway bridge at Stratford was mentioned by Dr. Doris Gordon yesterday when she explained to a reporter that the beautification possibilities of this area, now proposed as the site for benzine storage, were realised some years ago. The scheme for developing the land into walks and gardens /was, she said, no new idea. A small band of public spirited citizens had had the matter in view for some time and had even, gone to the length of purchasing suitable plants from Horopito last year, as well as rearing.- rhododendrons and azaleas. Last March they conducted the Mayor of Stratford, Mr. P. Thomson, over the area, pointing out its possibilities and explaining the tentative proposals of development.

Coloured lights 'were erected in Broadway, Stratford, yesterday by the borough elecirical department for the opening of the railway on Monday. About 300 coloured lamps have . been used. Business men have been asked to have their shops brilliantly lit on Monday night, and in ordgr that they will, not be°put to expense the. Mr. W. Norris had two toes badly crushed on Thursday as the result. of logs falling on him during unloading operations at..the Egmont Box Company’s mill at Eltham. He is at present confined to his home, but the injuries are not regarded as serious.

The Eltham Methodist Church held a successful shop day on Wednesday. The arrangements were carried out by Mesdames Weir, Bootten, senr. and junr., Reynolds and Bennington. , .■

The Eltham Plunket Society, at a meeting this week expressed gratitude to the Legion of Frontiersmen: for Its financial assistance as the result of a dance. The rainfall at Eltham for October was 5.70 inches, which is the greatest since 1926, when 1'2.27 inches was recorded. The committee organising the Stratford railway opening celebrations will be grateful if visitors from New Plymouth for the celebrations would spare seating accommodation in their cars to assist "in the work of transport to the opening of the Mountain Road and ie banquet on Monday night. Ample accommodation for parking will be available at the racecourse, 'where the banquet is to be held.
