CLAIM BY BRITISH FIRMS
TRADE MARKS PIRACY ALLEGED. JAPANESE COTTON GOODS IN INDIA By Telegraph—Press Assn.—- CopyrightCalcutta, Nov. 3. Numbers of wholesale dealers in foreign cloth in Amritsar have received notices from British firms claiming damages for importing from Japan and selling cotton goods bearing British trade marks. A strong accusation of trad© marks piracy against Japan and an equally vehement denial has been exercising the Indian business world. The discussion began when the chairman of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce declared that Japanese cotton goods manufacturers and traders in India were copying English trade marks and trade. designs and that, as a result of this piracy, Lancashire was losing thousands of pounds annually. Piece goods merchants in Calcutta and Bombay consider that the time has arrived for strong action to be taken.
