DAWSON FALLS RESORT

VISITORS TO THE HOSTEL. WET LABOUR DAY WEEK-END. The weather during the Labour Day week-end at Dawson Falls was very rough and the people on the mountain were in the same predicament as those in the rest of Taranaki. The hostel was full of visitors, many of whom were there for the first time. Naturally all were disappointed when they were forced to stay indoors for most of their holiday. A party of eight Taranaki Alpine Club members had intended to spend Saturday and . Sunday nights in Syme Hut, but as the weather was not at all promising on Saturday they stayed the night in the camp house. They were

away early next morning, however, when the weather cleared and the visitors could clearly see them climbing Fantham’s Peak.. Although it was snowing when they arrived they had about half an hour’s skiiing and were then forced inside when the weather broke again. They had to stay in the hut until Monday morning and as the weather showed no signs of clearing they left the hut, and after coming down the Kapuni in. soft snow they reached the hostel in about two hours. A small party of Stratford .Mountain Club members was also on Fantham’s Peak, but obtained little skiing. Miss Horrel; Christchurch, with Len Wills as guide, was forced back by the weather from an ascent of the mountain after reaching Syme Hut on Sunday. One of the cottages was occupied and the camp house was comfortably filled with campers during the week-end. Visitors in the hostel have included Mrs. Firth and Miss Maclean (New Plymouth), Mrs. Fleming, Miss Malone and the Misses Fleming (New Plymouth and Rahotu), Mrs. Grear and Mr. Grear (Wellington), Mr. Richardson and party (Auckland), Miss Atkinson (Nelson), 'Mrs. Fell (Nelson), Mrs. Brockett (Marlborough), Mr. and Mrs. Tidswell (Melbourne), Miss Small (New Plymouth ), Miss Horrel (Christchurch), Mrs. Harris (New’ Plymouth).

The Egmont Alpine Club ski sports are to be held on Fantham’s Peak on November 6 arid the Taranaki provincial ski championships on November 20.
