HAWERA SWIMMING CLUB

PIHAMA HOCKEY DANCE.

COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL RETORT.

A successful season is reported by the committee of the Hawera Swimming Club, which will hold its annual meeting to-night. The report states that the standard of swimming has improved, especially* among junior members. During the season three inter-club carnivals were held, financial results of which showed ' a marked falling off of public support. This was no doubt due to the unfavourable weather experienced. The support of swimmers from other clubs enabled some interesting programmes to be presented. Last year the .Taranaki championships were held at Hawera, and the manner in which they were conducted by the club was the subject of favourable comment throughout Taranaki. For the second year in succession the club was successful in winning the championship banner by a margin of 52 points out of a possible 113, There were 21 events, and local swimmers gained ten first, ten second and eight third places. The flying squadron, G. S. Anderson, A. Ryan, A. Dow,die and I. Jobson, won the relay championship. Four members of the club were also included in the South Taranaki relay team which defeated the North team. The successful certificate holders from the club are: A. Ryan, second 440yds, 880yds and one mile free-style; D. Ekdahl, second equal men’s diving; J. Oliver, first men’s diving; E. Griffin, second 150yds men’s backstroke; P. O. Veale, first 150yds men’s backstroke; F. Clarke, first 100yds men’s breaststroke; I. Jobson, second 100yds men’s free-style; G. S. Anderson, first 50yds men’s free-style; Miss Z. Spragg, second ladies’ diving; Miss P. Murray, first ladies’ diving, second 50yds intermediate girls’ free-style; Miss E. Kelson, first 50yds junior girls’' free-style and first 50yds intermediate girls’ free-style; D. McGlashan, first boys’ diving.

The club lost the Grey Cup to the Opunake Club. A club night for competitions and another for coaching were held weekly. These evenings were well supported by swimmers and the public. The Points Banner was again won by the vice-cap-tain’s team, the. Higgs Cup being won by Miss B. Smith, and the Spragg Club by Ron Clarke. Club championships were won as follow: Senior men, A. Ryan; novice cup, N. Chadwick; junior cup, R. Clarke; junior boys, C. B. Wylds; Moss Maitland Cup, Misses Z. Spragg and P. Murray equal; junior girls’ cup, Miss J. Beamish.

At practically every carnival in .Taranaki the club was well represented, and six swimmers travelled to Marton to attend the inaugural carnival there. For the first time for some years polo was actively participated in and many promising players were discovered. Although the teams did not! enter into the inter-club competitions it is hoped that this will be remedied this year. Thanks were due particularly to Messrs. O. V. Church and P. O. Veale for their capable assistance in this branch of the club’s’activities. .■■ A successful Jearn-td-swim week was again conducted, and.a large number of children received instruction. Some of the swimmers also visited the Tokaora school swimming pool and gave instruction there.

Dances were held after each carnival, and proved successful. The picnic was held at Kaupokonui beach, and a pleasant day was spent in swimming and athletic contests. During the winter months social evenings were held at the homes of some of the club members with the object of raising funds. The financial result of the season shows that a slight loss has been made, but the club was fortunate in having been, able to meet all liabilities.

The committee expresses appreciation of assistance given by the Hawera Borough. Council, the Press, club officials and the baths custodian (Mr. J. Dowdle).
