NEW PLYMOUTH PIPE BAND

SOCIAL AND PRESENTATIONS; A pleasant social evening was held at New Plymouth on Friday night when a competition amongst the pipers and drummers of the New Plymouth Pipe Band for trophies presented by Past Chief D. E. Brown and Chieftain A Rankin was held. It was also made the occasion for a reunion of past and present members of the band. • . The proceedings opened with a drumming competition, which was judged by DrumMajor P. McKenzie, the competitors being placed as follows: W. Marr 1, D. Dobbin 2, A. Black 3. A very fine exhibition of drumming was given by Drummer McCallum, of the Hamilton Pipe Band. Mr. McGregor judged the piping and the results were: Pipe-Major R. Black 1, Piper L. Johnston 2, Corporal P. Henry 3. Duets were played by Pipe-Major Black and Corporal Henry, Pipers Johnston and Rae, Pipers McLeod and Cruickshanks. The members of the band and friends then adjourned to the supper-room, where a short toast-list was honoured. ■ ’ In proposing the toast of the Pipe Band Past . Chief Brown briefly outlined the activities of the band for the past year, and thanked its members for the manner m which they had carried out their duties and for the support they had given the society. In reply Pipe-Major Black thanked society’s executive for the happy relationship which existed between it and the band; and said he felt sure that at all times the members would render loyal support to the society. Mr. J. F. Andrews, proposing the toast iof the judg.es, said they had always shown , a keen interest in the band and had willingly assisted whenever asked, and the society and band were very grateful for their assistance. Drum-Major McKenzie and Mr. McGregor made responses, Mr. McGregor stating that ; if pipes were played within earshot he always heard them and they brought back happy memories of the days when he took •an active part in competitions in Scotland. He complimented the competitors on a very creditable performance. Piper McLeod, speaking to the toast of the donors of the trophies, thanked Past Chief Brown and Chieftain Rankin for making the competition possible and bringabout the reunion of the band and its Responding, Chieftain Rankin said he had always wished to see the band go ahead and for several years had donated a trophy with the object of. stimulating the interest of the members ip., their work. Past Chief Brown said it was the preparation and th? competition itself that counted, and the extra practice and deter mination of the competitors to make a good performance would have a good general effect on the band. The following toasts were also honoured: “The Executive” (Mr. W. Thomson—Chief R. W. D. Robertson); “The Ladies” (Mr. J. Corkill—Mr. R. Bennoch); “The Guests’ (Mr. L. A.' Sarten—Messrs. J. Austin and McAllum). Songs were given by Mr. W. Thomson, Mr. Bennoch and Piper Cruickshanks.
