POTATO MARKET STEADIER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Aug. 19. The potato market, which had been showing 1 a firming during the week, steadied to-day. The main cause was an unexpected heavy shipment at the Bluff of 3500 sacks on the Waipiata, which is due to sail to-day. The vessel then proceeds to Dunedin, Timaru. and Lyttelton, For the Wingatui, which sailed on yVednesday, sales of small lots were made that day at £6 5s f.o.b. sacks in. Yesterday prompts were worth £6 to £6 2s 6d and to-day £6 is not attracting much business. A sale of Septembpr delivery was quoted during the week at £6 15s a ton, and to-day’s figure nominally is £6 10s. Values to farmers are £5 a ton. To August 13 this season 100,820 sacks have been shipped from Lyttelton, compared with 199,224 for the corresponding period of 1931. However, Southland and Otago have been heavy exporters. Sipall seeds are meeting with more inquiry from both North and South Islands for the spring sowing. Akaroa cocksfoot is worth- 9d a lb. for machine dressed, and plains from 8d to BJd. Perennial ryegrass is quoted at 5s 6d to 5s 9d a bushel and Italian at from 5s 6d to 5s 91.
