TREATMENT OF YAWS

CAMPAIGN IN SAMOA. SPECIALIST’S REPORT. (New Zealand Herald. Correspondent.) Suva, July 27. According to Dr. S. M. Lambert, who has returned to Suva, good progress is being made with the yaws campaign at present being conducted in Samoa by tho New Zealand Government in conjunction with the Rockefeller Foundation Dr. Lambert, a specialist in tropical diseases, attached to the Rockefeller Foundation went to Samoa in April last to start the campaign on its way and he stated that on this last visit he found that good progress had/been made. In fact, he said that almost too much progress had been made, as they had nearly run out of supplies, and further material had to be sent for hastily. In this short time, 85 per cent, of the population had presented themselves for treatment, which consisted of injections of organic arsenates. Dr. Lambert stated that the campaign will continue for two years, at the end of whicl| time it is hoped that Samoa will be clean as regards this disease. Yaws is a form of skin disease which is prevalent in the Pacific, particularly among young children. Early next month Dr. Lambert will proceed to New Zealand to confer with the medical authorities and will then proceed to Raraton'ga to survey the position there. Owing to the campaign carried out in 1925, following his former survey, Dr. Lambert says he does not anticipate that conditions will be bad in that island.
