COAL FOR RAILWAYS
RUMOURS OF NEW CONTRACT. MR. FORBES’ REPLY TO PROTEST. As a result of rumours that Glen Afton Collieries, Limited, was negotiating with the Railway Department for a "five years’ contract for the supply of coal to the department, representations were made to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, by the Huntly Borough Council, which protested against one coal company being given an exclusive contract, and pointed but that tho serious effect it would have on the working of other mines in the district.
The reply from the Prime Minister is as follows:—“I am advised by th Railway Department that the Railway Board is not aware of any effort being made by the Glen Afton Company in the direction indicated by you. J am arranging for your representations to be placed before the Railway Board.”
