NEW DEBATINS SOCIETY
NEW PLYMOUTH HIBERNIANS. To inaugurate the ' Hibernian Social and Debating Society about 50 men of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, NeW llymouth, attended a meeting in the Rolland Hall on Tuesday evening. The Rev. Father Henley, Who presided, said the society would supply a long-felt want in the parish. He urged the attendance of the young men and said that they would find the society s meetings entertaining and instructive. The president of the . New > Plymouth branch of the Hibernian Society,. Mr. N. Hannan, emphasised the useful purpose ’that would be scried and stressed
the value of a knowledge of debating and of public speaking. Messrs. D. L. McKay, J. D. Quirk and K. J. Staunton also spoke. Following the meeting, games were played. Mr. J. O’Reilly provided supper. It was announced that the first debate of the new society would be held <>n August 23, when the proposition under discussion will be ■ "that Prohibition would be detrimental to the best interests of New Zealand,” Messrs. Quirk and Finnegan will take the affirmative and Messrs. Staunton and O’Malley the negative.
