PROVISION OF RELIEF

WOMEN’S COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the Stratford Women's Relief Committee was held on Tuesday, when the following report was present- . “During the month 52 families have applied at the relief rooms for clothing. Fourteen of these had not previously received help. The total for the year now stands at 82 families, including 220 children. Three hundred and seventy-nine garments were distributed during July. We were able to supply these from the many parcels which are left at the rooms every Saturday, and we are very grateful to the residents of the town who remember our work. “Besides clothing we received two donations of money. The Stratford Boxing Association gave £1 18s. Bd., Mrs. Hugo 10s. and Mrs. O’Reilly a box of blitter, which was given out through the Self-Help Club. Mrs. ,N- B. Fletcher, deputy-Mayoress, was appointed acting president during Mrs. Thomson’s absence on holiday. Mrs. J. McAllister was appointed acting secretary during the coming school holidays. It was decided to close the relief rooms on Saturday, September 10. KEMP—DAVIS MARRIAGE. MANY INTERESTED WITNESSES. . “ With the church well filled by interested witnesses, Mr. David Kemp, J.P., a well-known farmer of Te Wera, was married to Mrs. Janet Davis, who has iust arrived in New Zealand from Wales, by the. Rev. T. Skiise in the Methodist Church, Stratford, yesterday. _ It was a wedding of special interest to the older generation. The ages of the contracting parties and their four close friends aggregated 412 years, an average of 69 years. The bride was attended by Mesdames J. Petrie, sen., and George Smart, while Mr. George Smart was best man. The bride was given away by Mr. Petrie. At the Windsor rooms afterwards other guests included Mr.. C. Jackson, who sold the Te Wera property to Mr. Kemp upon his first taking up land in the eastern districts, and Mrs. Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Hale, Miss M. Smart, Mr. Skuse and Miss Skuse.' The couple left later in the afternoon for Te Wera. Mr. Kemp has been engaged in farming operations in various parts of Taranaki for the past 40 years. Mr. and Mrs. Kemp intend shortly to reside at New Plymouth. DEMONSTRATION FARM FINANCE. EXPLANATION BY THE SECRETARY An explanation of the financial position of the Stratford Demonstration Farm Society was furnished to the annual meeting on Saturday by the secretary (Mr. W. Power). ( .The main aim, of course, Mr. Power said, was to secure sufficient revenue to meet commitments. The society had been in operation for 15 years and after providing .for depreciation there had been a loss of only' £224. There had been a profit accruing every year. If the farm'were sold as a going concern and realised its book value the society would- be able to return the Government subsidy. In 1923 there .h.ad been an overdraft of £7500 secured by guarantors, and it would be pleasing to them to know that now they did not have that hanging over their heads. The total indebtedness of the society now was £l5OO less than in 1923. The trouble was that in the past the finance had been, looked on as assured apd the profits had been devoted to improvements. It was therefore fortunate that for the last ten years the profits had been used to reduce indebtedness. The finance had been carefully investigated and there was no question of the society being, in an awkward position. With the economies that had been effected and with the reductions which would become effective this year the committee could see daylight ahead as long as the production of butter-fat was kept up to 15,0001 b. “Financially the society is in a healthy position, and if it became necessary to Liquidate, even under present conditions, no loss could fall on the creditors, the depositors or the mortgagee,” Mr. Power said. GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATED. MR. AND MRS. C. EADE, ELTHAM. A surprise party was given, at Eltham on Tuesday night for Mr. and Mrs. C. Eade, Castle Street, on the occasion of their golden wedding. The couple received numerous congratulatory letters and telegrams during the day, but had no inkling of the surprise that was in store for "them. During the evening the Rev. J. A. Ry-burn congratulated th® guests of honour, and Mr, Eade' responded. ' .? Both Mr. and Mrs. Eade came to New Zealand about 60 years ago, Mrs., Eade beino- a passenger on the famous “Three Bells.” Mr. Eade was first domiciled in the South Island. He recalled the arrival of prisoners from Parihaka during his stay at Dunedin. Mr. Eade led the chequered career of all pioners, and spent many years in bush-felling. He assisted in the building of the first wharf sheds at Lyttelton. . Fifty years ago the couple were married. There were three children of the marriage, two of whom are still living —Mr. W. Eade, Auckland, and Mrs.’ Fox, Te Kuiti, who, with her family, is visiting her parents. The son, Dr. Eade, who died of the effects of war wounds at Auckland a short while ago, was accorded the honour of a full military funeral, a party from the Wellington Mounted Rifles making a special visit to attend the ceremony. . In 1902 Mr. and Mrs. Eade and .their family came to Eltham, where Mr. Eade secured work in the box factory. There Mr. Eade saw Eltham grow amazingly. Both Mr. and Mrs. Eade enjoy good health. REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY. TARANAKI v. WELLINGTON. A match of considerable interest in hockey circles "will be played at Taumata Park, Eltham, to-day, when the tourin<r Wellington representative team will meet the Taranaki representatives, winners of the Nordon Cup. Both teams are in good form and they should be well matched in the contest. The game will be preceded, by a cur-tain-raiser, North v. South juniors, at 1.30. The visiting team will be entertained at dinner and afterwards at a dance.
