BIG LOAN ROLL CARRIED
NEW PLYMOUTH PROPOSAL
REDEMPTION OF MATURING LOANS
majority nearly eight to one
SUM OF £553,000 INVOLVED,
By a majority of nearly eight to one the ratepayers of New Plymouth yesterday authorised the Borough Council to proceed with the borrowing of a num of £553,000 to redeem existing loans maturing on April 1, 1933. The reau. of the poll was practically a foregone conclusion, and not a great deal of interest was taken, only about a quarter of the ratepayers taking the trouble to vote. There are approximately 4500 ratepayers on the roll, of whom 1109 voted. The votes cast in favour of the loan numbered 979, and those against 120, the number of informal votes being four. At noon yesterday, said the returning officer, Mr. R. Day, very few votes inded had been cast, but thanks to an energetic canvass in cars.by a committee operating under the auspices .of the United Ratepayers’ Association the position improved considerably during the afternoon, and from 4 p.m. onwards there was steady polling at all the booths.
The result of the poll was officially announced by Mr. Day at about 7.40 p.m. outside the Whiteley polling booth, the only representative of the public present to hear the announcement being a Daily News reporter. Details of the polling are:—
