SEARCH FOR GOLD

COROMANDEL PROSPECTING. POSSIBILITIES OF COUNTRY. / The immense possibilities which Coromandel offers in the search for gold are emphasised by an old proSpector who has spent the greater part of his life in the’ district. Coromandel, the oldest goldfield in New Zealand, he states, had produced many bonanzas during the past 70 years and still offered opportunities to the prospector. There was an extensive be*t of auriferous country runping north and south from Driving Creek to Tiki that was worthy of far greater attention than had so far been given to it. At the northern end of that zone quite appreciable quantities Of gold had been Won from th© Conquering Hero mine in the early days, and further southward, in the same channel of country, gold had been met with. Again, near Kapanga Road, west of the Taumatawahine block, good prospects were obtained by the late Mr. Magnus Kemner, ahd also at Tiki by the late Mr. James Vizard and others.

Those discoveries could be taken to prove that gold existed over an extensive area in ideal country. It was generally comparatively low-lying, rendering prospecting somewhat difficult, other than boring and sinking, but everything pointed to the possibility of a hew areg awaiting development. For a long time past Mr. A. J. Prescott, of a well-known mine manager and successful prospector, had been fully convinced that the belt mentioned was worthy of systematic and continued prospecting. About .18 months ago he took up a prospecting area On Mr. A. Notman’s farm. Loose gold was found in a number of places and was ultimately tracked hdme to the lodes that shed it. As a preliminary to permanent mining work Air. Prescott and his brothers took out a special claim licence through the Warden’s Court under the name of Nil Desperandum. Work h a S HP'"’ been in progress about three months. Two fair-sized lodes have been driven upon and proved to be gold-bearing
