REDUCTION OF STAKES

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB EVENTS. ■SPRING AND SUMMER MEETINGS. The allocation of prize-money for the spring meeting, to be held in November, and for seven major events to be run at the Christmas- carnival was decided upon by the committee of the Auckland Racing-Club yesterday. A reduction of £1950 from £7300 to £5350 was made in the spring programme, and the stakes for the seven summer races were lowered by £1750 from £6700 to £4950. , • The Mitchelson Cup, the chief handicap event in November, will carry a stake-of £650, compared with £lOOO last year. The stake includes a gold cup valued at £lOO. ■ The prize money for the Auckland Cup to be run on Boxing Day has been reduced from £2OOO to £l5OO. The gold cup forms part of the stake will this year be of the value of £5O instead of £lOO. The actual cash, distribution will be as follows: —Winner £lOOO, second £3OO, third £l5O. The Railway Handicap stake has been lowei - ed from £lOOO to £750. The decrease in the case of the spring meeting works out at 26.7 per cent, and for the seven summer events at 26.1 per cent. Totalisator investments at the four meetings of the club last season showed a decrease of 29 per cent compared with the preceding season, the respective totals being £426,169 and - £601,355. The consequent fall in revenue has made the readjustment of stakes necessary. It is 26 years since the prize-money for the Auckland Cup has been as low as £l5OO. . The rise and fall in the Cup stake is illustrated in the following fin-urcs:—l9o6, £1500; 1907 and 1908, £1750; 1909 to 1912, £2000;, 1913, £2150; . 1914 to 1917, £2050; 1918, £2750; 1919 and 1920, £3000; 1921, £3500; 1922 to 1930, £3000; 1931, £2000; 1932, £l5OO.
