POSSESSION OF FARM
CROWN TAKES ACTION.
ORDER GRANTED BY- COURT. warrant, giving a Taupiri farmer, Joseph Ormond Law, seven days in which to relinquish possession of a 5OO acres at Taupiri, was granted by Mr, F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court on Tesday. The issue of "the warrant marked the elose of protracted negotiations between the Crown and defendant for possession of the property. J ; Counsel for the Crown said that in ;/ f 1918 the area was purchased from James Law, defendant’s father, by the Crown , for cash. The land was allotted to J. 0. Law under the discharged soldiers’ settlement seneme, and £5OO was advanced. The land was valued in 1918 at £2OOO, and in 1927 a reduction of £3oo' was made, and all arrears of interest and current account were remitted. Law would not work, and the position became ; intolerable. It was decided to dispossess Law and sell the property to another settler, who was to have taken possession last month. Counsel for defendant said the Farmers’ Union had offered to supervise the management of the property, as it was realised that Law had not looked after it as intelligently as he ought to have done and that he was not physically fit. Counsel asked for a further month in which to give up possession. Counsel for the Crown objected to Law being given further grace. The case was a most urgent one, he said, and Law had ■been given ample warning. The magistrate said the case must be a bad one and absolutely hopeless.
