RANGER KILLED

A MANITOBA CRIME. WIFE’S BRAVE ACTION. Winnipeg, July 1». Airmen are assisting in a search over the wild area of the Northern Manitoba game reserve for two cold-blooded murderers who killed a forest ranger and then tried to murder his wife. She was wounded, but is expected to recover. Mrs. Frances Lees, 24, a bride of two months, told the police a remarkable story of the tragedy. She said her husband, who had been chasing poachers, had received threatening letters. Last night, as he; was sitting at supper, he was shot, a bullet fired from the window penetrating his neck. Running to his side, Mrs. Lees found her husband beyond assistance. She snatched his revolver and fired at two figures lurking outside.. Then she hastened to the telephone, still holding the gun, but the two murderers leaped into the room and fired at her point-blank. Mrs. Lees fell wounded beside the telephone. A distant police officer heard the shots and screams over the telephone, as the receiver was then off the hook. At daylight to-day the search for the criminals was begun. They have a seven hours’ start in rough country.
