ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES

DEATH OF MR. M. SUTHERLAND. BORN AT NEW PLYMOUTH IN 1856. Born' at New Plymouth 76 years ago, in a- house situated near the present location of Mr. R. C. Hughes’ home in Vivian Street, Mr. Martin Sutherland died suddenly *on Friday afternoon. Mr. Sutherland lived the whole of his life in Taranaki, between New Plymouth and Inglewood. His father was Mr. Ben. Sutherland, who came to New Plymouth from Scotland. He was a well known builder and was associated with the erection of many of the early publicr and private buildings at New Plymouth. Mr. Martin Sutherland was educated at the Schofield (Wesleyan) school. During the Maori War period he, with other members of his family, were among the settlers who were transferred to Nelson until the troubles had subsided. He married -Miss Jackson, the daughter of s a well known Lincolnshire family of Methodists who came to New Zealand many years ago, and settled at Inglewood, and whose golden wedding anniversary was celebrated about four years ago.

Mr. Sutherland’s first association "with the Inglewood district was in connection with the pioneer survey party which surveyed the Moa block. He afterwards entered into business at Inglewood as a general storekeeper, aud his sons have followed him in a business of a similar kind which they have conducted for many years. Qver 20 years ago the family removed from Inglewood to New Plymouth, and for many years Mr. Sutherland was employed in the Melbourne Clothing Company’s business. He was a loyal member of the Methodist Church, and for many years had been an officer of Whiteley Memorial Church, in which members of hisifamiiy are also active workers. Mr. Sutherland is survived by his widow and afainily of five sons and four daughters. One married daughter died about nine years ago. The surviving members of the family are Messrs. J. R. G. Sutherland (New Plymouth), B. B. Sutherland (Fiji), M. and L. Sutherland (Inglewood), D. G. Sutherland '(Napier), Mrs. Burn (Fiji), and the Misses I. 8., F. E. and V. M. Sutherland (New Plymouth). He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Messrs. William Sutherland (Waitara) and George Sutherland (Auckland), Mrs. M. McIsaacs (New Plymouth) and Mrs. H. Cumming (Ngaio, Wellington). The funeral was very largely attended by friends and relatives from all over the province and as far as Wellington. The Revs. Clarence Eaton and J. Nixon officiated, Mr. Eaton making a brief address. eulogising Mr. Sutherland’s efforts as a settler, as a man who had always done his day’s work faithfully and who had worked hard for. the -hurch he loved.
