CUSTOMS RETURNS LOWER
FIGURES OF SOUTHERN CENTRES.

Customs returns for July in Christchurch as compared with July, 1931 are: Customs, £60,705, £60,734; beer duty, £5934, £4883; motor spirit tax, £14,223, £20,495; tyre duty, £576, £ll7l. Details for the seven months that have elapsed of the calendar year are: Customs, £412,443, £404,049; beer duty, £45,025, £42,046; motor spirit tax, £115,052, £14'1,678; tyre dutv, £5748, £9454.
Dunedin reports that considering that in July last year there was a considerable clearance owing to expectations of changes in the tariffs, the customs returns for the past month are quite satisfactory. The returns, with those for July of last year in parentheses, are as follows: Customs, £49,395 15s 4d (£57,238 8s sd); beer, £13,525 14s 5d (£10,335 4s 2d); petrol, £11,283 15s Gd (£14,030 ss); tyres, £549 19s (£1079 Is).
