SKI-ING ON MOUNTAIN SLOPE
.TARANAKI ALPINE CLUB’S TRIP. A first attempt at ski-ing was made by many members of the Taranaki Alpine Club who made a trip to the Stratford mountain house and plateau yesterday. It was the club’s first visit to the Stratford side of Mount Egmont and tho trip proved popular, about 40 members turning out and an extra bus being required. Owing to delay fn transport to the mountain house the party, which left New Plymouth early, did not arrive until mid-day. Snow covered the road from the house to the plateau, about two miles, and the ski-ers had to walk the distance.
The snow on the plateau was wet, for there had been rain previously, though none fell throughout the afternoon. About six inches of good snow on the ski track provided good conditions for the novice ski-ers, who expressed the greatest keenness to make another trip to the plateau as soon as it could be arranged. Only a few members, of the club are experienced on skis but the enthusiasm of the learners made up for their inexperience and the three and a half hours spent on the plateau were none too many.
