The annual meeting of the Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade was largely attended by borough. officials and other visi; tors, the Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, presiding. The report stated that the membership continued at full strength. Hydrantman C. Carey, Secretary N. R. Coad and Foreman W. Sedgman attended all of the 37 musters. . There had been five calls.during the year and three wet practices. No serious fires had occurred. Service honours had been gained, by branchman E. Nielson, gold star, 27 years’ service; R. During the meeting the new siren mounted on the water tower was sounded by one of the borough staff. The trial was in the nature of a false alarm" to test the value of the machine. It was not heard by those at the fire station, although the. siren was continuously for nearly five minutes. PERSONAL ITEMS. Sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. H. Thrush in their bereavement was expressed by the Tokaora Farmers’ Union field competitions party yesterday. Mr. Thrush is president of the branch.' GENERAL ITEMS. At Matapu to-night a dance will be held to aid the boys’ and girls’ club funds. Good music has been arranged and an enjoyable evening is promised. A euchre and dance party, in aid of the Convent 'School fifnds, was held in the Manaia Parish Hall pn Monday. The music was supplied by the Dixie, orchestra, with extras by Misses Glengarry and Arden, Mrs. Gopperth and Messrs Whalen and Abbott. Mr. L. Hughes was master of ceremonies. Euchre prizes were won by, 'Mrs. M. Brown (141 games), Mrs. H. Whalen (134), Mr. A. Duggan (14J), and Mr. P. Horgan (13), the latter, after a play-off with Mr. C. Lord. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Miss Sutter and Mr. Wallace and Miss M. Cosgrove and Mr. J. Brennan. Supper was provided by Mesdames McGlinchey, Scannel, Winter and T. Paterson. Prizewinners at the Recent Kapuni euchre party were Mr, A. Duggan T, Mr. Parkes 2; Mrs. Harper 1, Mre. Totfgood 2. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr. A. Smith and partner. The Normanby dairy factory will from to-day/ run every day and cheesemaking will be commenced on Saturday. This is the earliest that the Normanby factory has commenced running every day. Suffering from a fractured jaw as the result of a (kick from a horse, Stanley Mead, a Patea youth employed in the district as a farm-hand, was admitted to the Patea Hospital over the weekend, and was yesterday reported to be making good progress. At the monthly meeting of the Hawera branch of the W.C.T.U. donations of money for the Willard Home were received. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Evans and Squire. A meeting of the Waitotara. Archdeaconry Clerical Society was held at Hawera on Tuesday. There was a service at St. Mary's Church, conducted by the vicar of Hawera, the Rev. H. Whit-by-James. After lunch the society met at the vicarage, and a paper was read by the Rev. W. Tye, vicar of Wanganui parochial district. Mrs. Whitby-James was at home to the risiting clergy. Those present were Archdeacon Young, Canon W. Williams, the Revs. W, Tye, W. Solomon, A. J. Farnell, D. B. Malcolm, W. Langston, W. H. Walston and C. L. Dobbs.
