, SOCIAL AND SPORTS • EVENTS. Tho fourth of the scries of euchre parties being conducted by the Manutahi hall committee - was held on Tuesday evening. There was a fair attendance. The prizes were won by Mrs. 11. Dickson with games, and by Mr. R. Morton with 9J games. Eleven games were played. After- supper Miss O’Sullivan provided tho music for dances. Nearly 40 people attended the opening night of the Manutahi Social Club on" Thursday. A. very enjoyable' evening was spent at .ping-pong, games and competitions. It was decided to alter the night of the meeting to avoid clashing with functions in other districts. Owing to the encouraging support the club will meet in the hall instead of in the library. Tho alterations to tho tennis court are now well advanced, thanks to a working bee of members on Saturday afternoon. Another day should bo sufficent to complete tlie work. .The Manutahi school children played basketball and football matches against the Alton school children on Saturday morning. The Manutahi basketball team suffered defeat by. 24. goals to 1. Two football matches were- played. In the first, played under an eight-stone limit, Manutahi won by 24 points to nil. The scorers were V. Gush and R. Penny. Tho second match was played at the full strength of tho school. This was an even and interesting game, Alton winning by 9 to 7. The Wanganui Boys’ and Girls Clubs are charging entrance fees for the calf and root crop competitions this year. This has been made necessary, it is believed, by the withdrawal of the Government subsidy. Reckoning on last year’s entries the fees will net the club about £45.
