ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of tho council of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society was held at New Plymouth last night. Those present wore Messrs. W. R. Johns, (president), A. Little, N. 8. James, A. Maetzig, T. Wilson and A. E. Baker. Messrs. Wilson and Little reported having waited upon the New Plymouth Borough Council to discuss the questions of fishing and shooting upon Lake Mangamuhoe. The society agreed that po shooting be allowed on the dam or in th© reserve; that it was not advisable to have the reserve gazetted as an sanctuary but that it b© closed for shootunder the terms of the Icttei of advice to the borough council from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Regulations under which the society wished to have the reserve opened for fishing were decided aud will be put before the council, They are that fishing be allowed after October 1 from the shore only; that the borough council caretaker bo asked to become a ranger on th© reserve; that a notice be placed in tho entrance stating the local regulations for fishing on the lake; that for sanitary reasons no fish be cleaned within tho reserve;- that no fishing from boats bo allowed; that cars of fishermen be parked within the reserve at stipulated places if necessary; that the eatch of fish from the lake be limited to 10. ■ ..A. ■ >'' Tho Taranaki Daily-News is to be thanked for its ’ donation towards the funds of the society. The curator of the Durham Road hatchery, Mr. J. H. McKenzie, reported that considering that spawning fish ran up the rivers in most districts in May he realised when he took up his duties on June 1 that traps would have to be erected immediately to obtain any satisfactory results. A trap was erected in the Ngatoro stream below the dam and contained fish tho following day. A trap was also erected at the hatchery stream. The Ngatoro trap justified its existence by producing 30,000 ova, but it should have beeen in tho river early in May, The first and usually the best run of fish had passed up the river, evidence of which was manifest by the fact that well advanced fish were impounded the night tho trap was completed. Male fish predominated in the Ngatoro trap but females were obtained with good results in the Waiongona-iti with the help of Messrs. Maetzig and Gush. The hatchery trap yielded only four males. In his opinion the run was now over and the traps would be removed. At present 50,000 brown and 4000 rainbow ova were accommodated, in the hatching boxes. All were taken from local fish, A concrete holding pond was constructed at the hatchery. The curator also reported on routine work. He hoped to be able to effect considerable improvements in and about the hatcheiy in the near future. A remit is to be placed before the annual -New Zealand conference of acclimatisation societies that every fisherman be compelled to buy his license in the district in which he resides, with the exception of Rotorua and laupo.
